The Migration

Over two million wildebeest along with zebras, gazelles and elands take part in the migration through Serengeti National Park each year. It is, without doubt, the greatest spectacle of wildlife in Africa. Determined by local rainfall patterns, their search for food and water takes them through the southern part of the park all the way up past the Mara River on the border with Kenya. Their epic journey is about survival—the real circle of life.

Serengeti National Park

DAY 4

After breakfast you'll head out on your first full day in Serengeti. It is Africa’s most famous wildlife sanctuary, renowned for its dense predator population and annual migration. It is remarkable not only for the unimaginable volume of animals that inhabit its vast expanses but also for the thrilling sense of infinite space in which you are viewing them. You’ll spend most of the day exploring central Serengeti, stopping for lunch in the park, and in the afternoon getting an up-close look at the animals you encounter. In the evening you'll head back to camp where you can relax, have dinner and overnight.

DAY 6

In the morning following breakfast you will head back out to the plains of Serengeti, this time traveling further north or south (depending on the time of year) to follow the migration. Today you'll have the opportunity to see the animal kingdom in action-mothers with their babies, herds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras seeking abundant grazing, and the predators and scavengers that accompany them. At day’s end you’ll return to camp for dinner and overnight.

Travel to Ngorongoro

After breakfast, you will head back out to do your final game drive in Serengeti. Around lunchtime you will make your way out of Serengeti heading towards Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you will overnight before entering the famed Ngorongoro Crater the next day.

Ngorongoro Crater

DAY 8

Following an early breakfast you will embark on the final day of safari, which will take you to Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact caldera. Your safari drive will follow the road along the rim of the crater, affording breathtaking views across the 100 sq. mile crater 2000 feet below, and then descend to the crater floor. The steep walls of the crater and verdant floor serves as a natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest populations of large mammals, including a few rhinoceros. Ascending the crater in the afternoon, you will travel back to Arusha where you'll head to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home.

TRIP FAQS

What is so special about the migration?

+ The Sheer Volume

Each year over 2 million wildebeest, zebras, impalas and eland cross the endless plains of the Serengeti. It's hard to imagine what that means but on this trip you'll see something that only happens in one place on the planet.

+ Viewing Time

From December to January, you can experience the migration in the South of Serengeti. This is calving season for wildebeest and zebras so there are plenty of chances to spot tons of new babies and to see the predators at work.

From February to July, the migration is making its way through the middle of Serengeti.

From August to September, wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River in the North of the park – with crocodiles serving as their biggest enemy.
